Over 2,500 weapons seized at schools between April 2015 and start of 2017

School Lockdown Alert News

Recent data from UK Police Forces reveal a “worrying” surge in the number of young people carrying weapons in schools, suggesting an increased need for Lockdown Alert Systems

Figures from 32 forces across England and Wales tell that 2,579 weapons were seized at schools between April 2015 and the beginning of this year. These include axes, air guns and almost 500 knives.

Leader of the National Police Chiefs taskforce on knife crime, Chief Constable Alf Hitchcock, said “We have recently seen an increase in young people carrying knives and this is worrying. We are responding to this trend by targeting those who carry them illegally and working with retailers to reduce the sale of knives to underage people through nationally coordinated operations.”

Figures released to the Press Association show that between April 2016 and the beginning of the year, 1,369 weapons were found. This represents a rise of almost 20% on the previous full year.

Even more concerning is the age of some of the children found with weapons. At least 47 were younger than 10, and three were five-year-olds.

The issue of knife crime in schools has been highlighted in a number of recent cases. Ann Maguire, a Spanish Teacher at Corpus Christi Catholic College, was stabbed to death by pupil Will Cornick in April 2014. In 2015, teacher Vincent Uzomah was seriously injured at Dixons Kings Academy when stabbed by a 14 year old pupil in a pre-planned racist attack.

Government figures for 2014-15 show that primary and secondary school pupils in England were suspended for assault or verbal abuse and threatening behaviour in more than 132,000 instances. There were also over 2,100 permanent exclusions for the same reasons.

Police have urged London schools to install metal detectors in an attempt to protect children from ever increasing violent crime.

Bodet's Lockdown Alert System can increase security and communication for both pupils and staff within your school. Whilst many schools still use their fire alarm to announce emergency situations, such as evacuation and lockdown, this goes against government recommendations for lockdown procedures. A dedicated Lockdown Alert System provides clarity, ensuring everyone on school premises knows exactly how to respond in these time-critical circumstances.
