School Lockdown: Incident outside school in Great Wyrley

Lockdown School Alert

Great Wyrley Academy goes into lockdown after a knife-wielding youth is spotted by the school gates

Following reports of a boy with a knife outside the main school gate, police were called to Great Wyrley Academy and the school was put in lockdown.

The lockdown lasted for about 15 minutes, during which students were instructed not to leave the grounds. A 17-year-old boy was arrested for being in possession of a bladed article.

Shortly afterwards, Staffordshire Police issued a statement reassuring parents and members of the public that there had been ‘little to no risk’, and that the incident had been resolved quickly.

Following the arrest, the teenager was released by the police and investigations are on-going.

Ian Moreton, Headteacher at Great Wyrley Academy, published the following comment on the school website and in a letter to parents:

“As you will be aware Great Wyrley Academy had to initiate the school lockdown procedure yesterday at 3pm. We received a phone call from a member of the public who reported a person acting suspiciously outside the main school gate.

"Police were called and were at the school gates within minutes. They dealt with the person swiftly and safely. The school gates remained shut and the entire incident took place off the school premises. At all times students and staff were safe.

Lockdown School Alert Solution

“The lockdown was used as a precaution, advised by the police. All Great Wyrley Academy students and staff remained calm and sensible during the 15 minute delay to the end of the school day. I am really proud of how everybody reacted.”

The Department for Education has recently published draft guidance on security for schools, which suggests considering the introduction of lockdown procedures. Current lockdown advice from the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) recommends not to use fire alarms to broadcast lockdown alerts, to avoid an incorrect response to an emergency incident.

Bodet’s Lockdown Alert System allows you to broadcast a unique lockdown alert, separate to other emergency situations such as evacuation, using a range of remote and local trigger methods. This means your staff and students instantly know what’s happening and how to respond, increasing both safety and communication.
